Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about our laser scanning services, deliverables, and project process.

How accurate is laser scanning?

Our 3D laser scanning technology achieves millimeter-level precision, typically within 1-6mm depending on the scanner type and project requirements. This level of accuracy far exceeds traditional measurement methods and provides reliable data for architectural design, engineering analysis, and construction planning. The precision ensures that your as-built drawings and BIM models reflect true building conditions.

Scanning duration depends on project size and complexity. Individual scans with professional laser scanners can capture data in less than 2 minutes, with scanners like the Leica P-Series capturing 1 million points per second. The industry rule of thumb for laser scanning duration is about 25,000-30,000 square feet per day, though this varies based on building complexity and required detail level. Some projects have captured entire complex job sites of 50,000 square feet within a day when working efficiently.

Depending on your project needs, you'll receive comprehensive documentation in industry-standard formats compatible with your existing software. This includes high-resolution point clouds (.e57, .rcp, etc), 2D CAD floor plans and elevations (AutoCAD .dwg), 3D BIM models (Revit .rvt, etc.), and PDF drawings. We also provide MEP system documentation when requested and detailed measurements for any specific building elements you require. All deliverables are dimensionally accurate and ready for immediate use in your workflows.

Minimal preparation is required on your part. We handle most of the technical setup, but a few simple steps help ensure efficient scanning: provide clear access to all areas requiring documentation, remove temporary obstructions like equipment or furniture that might block architectural features, inform us of any hazardous areas or safety protocols, and share any existing plans or access codes if available. Our scanning process is non-disruptive, so occupied spaces typically don't need to be cleared. Most clients find the process much simpler than initially expected.

We are helping businesses document buildings with the best quality and precision.

Professionals across industries trust Neumeter for reliable building documentation. Our laser scanning technology ensures precise measurements every time.
